A free car park at Shipley makes a good place to start a walk up onto the moor towards Avon Dam and beyond. As is so often the case accross Dartmoor the scenary changes throughout the seasons, infact it changes from one hour to the next!!

There is a private road (owned by South West Water) that runs from Shipley Bridge up to the Avon Dam along the side of the River Avon. This makes a plesent walk for everyone and is suitable for children, pushchairs etc.

These photographs, taken in November 2007, show the river after a night of heavy rain. In the summer months this area is full of sunbathers and picknickers spreading out over the flat, smooth rock.

Again, after the heavy rains the tree now appears in the middle of the river!!
